Savina Yannatou Concert in Sdra Teatern
The Greek artist Savina Yannatou and the ensemble Primavera en Salonico offer a daunting essay in the recuperation of traditional musics from one of the world's enduring cultural crossroads. Yannatou reveals herself as a singer of astounding range, superb vocal control and consummate musical scholarship. A painter, classically trained singer, and exponent of early, Renaissance and Baroque music, Sephardic song and avant-garde jazz, Yannatou sought out immigrants in her native Athens to coach her pronunciation in the 14 languages and dialects heard on the album. The exceptional instrumental work of Primavera en Salonico on nay (rim-blown flute), recorder, guitar, kanonaki (psaltery), lutes (oud, tamboura), violin, viola, double bass, and percussion (bendir, daoul, tambourine, toumbeleki) furthers the project's compelling beauty and pan-cultural depth of feeling.

Unique Greek-Swedish research cooperation between industry and academia on environment and climate in the Mediterranean was signed today in Stockholm. The Academy of Athens, Stockholm University and TEMES launch a European research collaboration that represents an important step in efforts to increase Swedish and Greek cooperation in the field of environmental protection and sustainable development. The Bert Bolin Centre for Climate Research at Stockholm University, the Centre of Environmental Health and Biophysics of the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens and TEMES S.A., a Greek private company, today signed a trilateral agreement for the establishment of the Navarino Environmental Observatory (N.E.O.) in Greece, in the region of Messinia in the southwest Peloponnese. The discussions for the establishment of N.E.O. were initiated by the University of Stockholm more than a year ago.

GREEK ORIGIN SHORT FILM MAKER IN STOCKHOLMS FILM FESTIVAL
Short film THE COVE, By Louis Psychyios. In the Japanese coastal town of Taiji something horrible is taking place. Between the whale museum and city hall lies a lush national park, and in its middle a hidden cove. Each year approximately 23 000 dolphins are captured and slaughtered there. The strings are pulled by the dolphinariums around the world who need a few specimens for their shows while the rest of the animals are killed for their meat - a deadly business since their meat is highly toxic on account of the high levels of mercury it contains.National Geographic photographer Louie Psihoyos set out for Taiji together with former Flipper trainer Ric O'Barry, and together they assembled a team of experts with the sole purpose of exposing the secrets of the cove.Psihoyos effectively uses the audiovisual medium as a call to action - and hopefully to make a change. But THE COVE also plays like a fastpaced thriller as its protagonists use hi-tech cameras (supplied by the same company that created Jar-Jar Binks for George Lucas) and risk jail. As director Psihoyos puts it: "Just try to do the story legally."

GREEK FILM COMPETES IN STOCKHOLMS FILM FESTIVAL
''DOGTOOTH'', by Yorgos Lanthimos.Cultural codes are challenged in this controversial portrayal of a dysfunctional family. A strict father has found authority within his domestic kennel: a safe haven, where his wife and children can be shielded from the evils of the outside world. The children's behavioral patterns are critically affected by the strange circumstances in which they are brought up-home videos are their only visual entertainment, they are taught that cats are viscous monsters, and they rapturously listen to Frank Sinatra in the belief that he is their grandfather. But this perversely idyllic bubble is about to come under attack as a female outsider suddenly enters the family's world. Through inspired direction, Lanthimos orchestrates this strangely plausible dollhouse, letting intellectual acid drips onto initially comical territory as the story dwells into existential doubts, finding itself somewhere in the confused landscape of humanity. An exploration of the fine line between man and animal, "Dogtooth" leaves us wondering if society as we know it is in fact nothing but a zoo.

GREEK FOLK JEWELLERY EXHIBITION IN STOCKHOMS WALDEMARSUDDE MUSEUM
The President of the Hellenic Republic Mr Karolos Papoulias will inaugurate on Thursday, May the 21st, the exhibition "Greek Traditional 18th-19th Century Jewellery from the collection of the Greek Folk Art Museum in Athens".Viewed as a whole, Modern Greek silverware has roots that extend to all the areas in which Greek civilization flourished, from Cyprus to the north coast of Asia Minor and Sarhprampolis in Pontos. The main characteristic of Greek silver-and gold ware during the 18th -19th century is the abstraction and reworking of traditional decorative elements, a feature that links the output of the Greek silversmiths with their European models. All the silver and gold-ware jewellery pieces exposed at Waldemarsudde, can become a source of inspiration for all modern artistic creators, since they convey values from different chronological and historical periods, thus being the proof of the diachronic and valuable existence of Greek Jewellry, through ages. The exhibition hosted at Waldemarsusdde Museum (Prins Eugens vg 6, Stockholm) will be open to the public from May 22nd-June 15th,2008.(entracne:65 SEK,special price for Greek community members)

Mediterranean Sustainable Energy Summit 2010 begins in Athens
The third annual Mediterranean Sustainable Energy Summit 2010 began at Athens' Hilton Hotel on Tuesday with the participation of government officials, corporate leaders, financiers, academics and global experts. The two-day summit that ends on Wednesday is organised under the auspices of President of the Republic Karolos Papoulias.Among the keynote speakers is Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou, who is due to speak on Wednesday, Prince Albert II of Monaco that spoke on Tuesday morning and former European Commissioner for the Environment Stavros Dimas. In his address, Dimas noted that a carbon tax on sectors not included in the European Commission's plan for reducing carbon emissions will help create more jobs, since low-emission technologies tended to be more labour-intensive than conventional ones. This view was echoed by Dr. Samuel Fankhauser, a research fellow at Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change & the Environment at the London School of Economics, who stressed that a carbon tax would be one of the most positive policy tools from a fiscal standpoint.Dimas also argued in favour of increasing the EU's target for reducing carbon emissions from 20 percent at present to 30 percent, again in order to create more jobs, and in order to preserve Europe's leading role in environmental protection through "an exemplary stance and action"."We must recruit the forces of conscience and common sense in order to deal with this crisis," the former Commissioner added. The energy summit was organised by Financial Times Limited in association with the Institute for Climate and Energy Security and C&C International.Taking place over two days, the comprehensive agenda will interpret the outcomes of the UNs Copenhagen conference and the implications for future energy and environment policy development in the Mediterranean region.

It serves as an occasion to remember that volunteerism constitutes the surest path to a society which is more humane and shows greater solidarity. CARNIVAL CELEBRATIONS
Greece's Carnival season known as Apokries is a period of eating, drinking, dancing and masquerading. Traditionally, it begins ten weeks before Greek Orthodox Easter and culminates on the weekend before Clean Monday, (Ash Monday) the first day of Lent. This year, the carnival season lasts from February 8 until March 2. The roots of Carnival celebrations and customs can be traced back to ancient Greece and are linked to the worship of Dionysus, the Greek god of wine and festivity. In fact, Carnival is closely related to the cultural heritage of each region and every year many traditional customs are being revived in different parts of the country. The Patras Carnival is the most popular in Greece, ranking among the top carnival celebrations in the world. The Carnival of Xanthi (Thrace) and Skyros include more traditional events (video-skyros). In Corfu and Rethymno (Crete), the celebrations have absorbed a slightly Venetian flavour from the periods that the islands were under the control of Venice. In Galaxidi, Carnival events culminate on the first Monday of Lent with a parade of floa ts, transformed into a battlefield, as the "warriors" merciless pelt each other with ample quantities of variously coloured flour.

The archaeological site of Pella, in northern Greece, officially opened on Monday. Culture Minister Mihalis Liapis toured the site and an archaeological museum under construction, expected to open in the first half of 2009. Pella was the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Macedon. Pella was later the seat of King Philip II and his son Alexander the Great. The most important group of mosaics in Macedonia was found in Pella (see picture). Ionic Centre: Antikythera Mechanism exhibition
The Ionic Centre is hosting the first exhibition showcasing the renowned Antikythera Mechanism, a display which is jointly organised with the Antikythera Mechanism Research Project and the National Archaeological Museum. The exhibition which is placed under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture, is taking place from October 22 to December 14. The Mechanism of Antikythera - an ancient mechanical object which has begun to be "decoded" scientifically only in the past few years - has attracted world-wide interest and re-writes the history of science and culture, not only for Greece but for the entire world. The history of this extraordinary object begins in the mid 1st century BC, when a ship loaded with artefacts and precious objects, possible heading towards Rome, sinks near Antikythera. About two thousands years later, in the spring of 1900, two fishing boats with sponge divers discover one of the most important treasures of antiquity. Filled with signs and cog wheels, it was characterized early as belonging to the family of astronomy instruments - sometimes as an astrolabe, a planetarium, an instrument used for sailing or a combination of instruments. When the first results of the Mechanism Research Project, comprising of top Greek and foreign specialists, were announced in Athens in the end of 2006, they brought about international interest - an interest which continues today. At the Ionic Centre, visitors will have the opportunity to see the mechanism as scientists see it, using the latest technology, to experiment with the calculation models that were developed and to use the software developed for making the erased engravings on its surface appear.

Mitt Grekland
Tips infr bµtluffen i Grekland
Mµste man boka frjebiljett lµng tid i frvg? Nr gµr bµtarna? Istoria 52-Greek Movie in Stockhholms Film Festival
This is the debut long feature for the director, and it is a very nice surprise for the Greek cinema. Indeed, Alexiou manages to tell an extraordinary tale in an interesting and convincing manner. The narration follows a circular pattern, where the central hero keeps remembering and reliving the story of how he met the woman he loves. This may remind someone of the films by David Lynch, and it is true that Alexiou seems to have been influenced by the great American director, although it would be unfair to compare the two, since this is only a debut film which cannot avoid having some weaknesses, especially as far as the screenplay is concerned. It is also vague what the director tries to communicate with this film, although one might think of paranoid jealousy, mental and spiritual idleness (in a way the exact opposite of "L'amour fou"), mental instability and the circularity of time which prevents people from accomplishing their goals. In any case, this seems to be a unique movie in modern Greek cinema, and I am sure that people from other countries will also enjoy it, as long as they have in mind that it is only a first feature film.

Anti-kythera Mekanismen - Antik apparat kunde frutsga framtiden
